A new calix[6]arene scaffold bearing four coordination sites binds CuII to yield a trinuclear complex devoid of receptor cavity. Whereas nitrile or formamide guest do not alter this state, addition of a heptylamine, which is further Brønsted basic, selectively reveals the receptor properties of the system. It yields a tetranuclear host-guest complex in which is backbone is preorganized in front of three model complexes of polynuclear copper enzymes.[:]
