The introduction of amido spacers between the calixarene and the tren cap drastically affects the hosting properties of the zinc and copper complexes as a result of second-coordination-sphere effects and increased flexibility. Upon O2 exposure at low temperature, the Cu(I) complex reacts with O2 to give a green species, with a UV−vis signature typical of an end-on superoxide Cu(II) complex. Such a species is presumed to be responsible for oxygen insertion into the ligand.
